Tipping in the massage industry is an interesting topic that many people are unclear about. As in many service industries, tipping is a complementary way to compensate for the person surpassing expectations.
In the massage industry, a one hour massage usually equates to 2 or 3 hours of regular work. This being said, despite the potential of the therapist being able to earn a higher hourly rate they can only work half or a third as much without the risk of injury to their hands and bodies.
The minimum standard to tip a massage therapist is usually at least 15%-20%, which is similar to what a waiter or waitress would receive.
Tipping is not expected but is much appreciated, as it helps the therapist to earn more for the hard work they put into providing an excellent massage.
